The Types Of Macular Degeneration You Get

By Candace Hubbs

Among older individuals, macular degeneration is the top cause of blindness or vision loss. This degeneration refers to the tissues around the macula, which is the part of the retina that allows for sharp vision.

The dry version of macular degeneration is actually the early stage of the disease. Although its exact cause is not known, it is believed to be caused by age and the thinning of the macular lining.

The main characteristic of dry macular degeneration is when drusen appears. Drusen are spots, yellowish in color, that are caused by deposits from the deteriorating tissue around the macula. Dry macular degeneration does not cause as severe vision loss as the wet version, but no definitive treatment has been found. Some studies have shown that certain vitamins may slow the progress of the degeneration.

The other, more severe, version of macular degeneration is characterized by a process known as neovascularization. This term refers to the formation of new blood vessels. It is actually the body's attempt to repair the damage of dry macular degeneration. Instead, it only causes further damage ultimately leading to blindness. The damage is caused by leakage that permanently damages the cells of the retina. Only a small fraction of people with dry macular degeneration progress to the more severe wet version.

The wet version also comes in two categories with one being less severe than the other. The occult version does not form as many vessels and less leakage occurs. The other category, though, causes severe damage to the vision. The classic category forms a multitude of new vessels that can be seen beneath the retina. The leakage of these vessels is also more pronounced. Thus the most severe damage is done with classic wet macular degeneration. - 17273

Knee Surgery: Reconstruction of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament

By Dr. Stefan Tarlow

ACL Reconstruction: An Overview

The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) stabilizes the knee. It is easily torn because of its location and the extent of activity and stress the knee joint is subjected to on a regular basis. The choice to treat ACL damage with surgery is an individual choice.

It is based on such factors as how much damage the rest of the knee structure has suffered, the stability of the knee, the patients activity level, and the patients age. If surgery will allow the patient to return to the pre-injury activity level, it is usually recommended.

ACL reconstruction can stabilize the knee and prevent further damage to the articular cartilage and the cartilage cushions, known as the menisci. It can also help in preventing premature knee deterioration.

Across the board, ACL reconstruction surgery is performed arthroscopically. Personally, I believe that an autograft-tissue graft that comes from the patient is the best thing to use. The alternative is an allograft. This is a graft harvested from a cadaver.

However, I think allografts are subject to problems. Recent research has indicated that patients under age 25 who receive an allograft followed by an aggressive rehabilitation program are 10-25% more likely to have problems.

Click here to learn more about knee arthroscopy.

I prefer to use Patellar Tendon Autograft with interference screw fixation for patients below the age of 30 who have no underlying patellofemoral disease. Additionally, I prefer Hamstring Autograft (semitendinosis and gracilis combined) with a rigid extra-articular fixation - the Rapid Loc or Toggle Loc, for example - on the femur as well as the Washer Loc on the tibia.

If the patient is under age 25, I have been known to use an allograft as long as the patient guarantees he will not engage in aggressive, competitive sports for a full year following the surgery. This period of time gives the allograft a chance to heal. Also, I will use allografts when there is more than one ligament that needs to be reconstructed.

The ACL acts to provide stability for the knee and to keep stress at a minimum across the knee joint:

Excessive forward movement of the tibia (lower bone of the leg) in relation to the femur (thigh bone) is also prevented by the ACL.

Additionally, it prevents excessive rotational movement of the knee.

Liquid Vitamins and Minerals - Better Versions of Supplements

By Martin Castella

Liquid vitamins and minerals provide that much needed urgency when it comes to healing and nurturing the human body. Unlike those that are consumed through solid foods and supplements, vitamins and minerals in liquid form are more effective in distributing different sources of energy in our system. While there are a lot of chronic diseases present in the world today, the antioxidants present in the liquid vitamins and minerals can help our bodies remain fit and strong.

Whether you are full-figured or petite, you still need your daily dose of vitamins and minerals. Since these nutrients come in an assortment of names and types, a person must be responsible enough to know which ones are needed by their bodies and which ones should be taken on a regular basis. These help us carry out all the important tasks we have lined up for everyday.

As antioxidants, vitamins and minerals come in as health supplements or products in liquid form for better digestion of the body. These are then processed inside our system as organic ingredients made from natural elements that shall help the bodily organs carry out their functions.

The absorption of vitamins and minerals in the body is solely dependent on the state of the nutrients being processed. In liquid form, the supplements consumed by the body are processed at a more efficient and timely level, allowing the body to absorb all the strength and energy that it can.

It has also been found that a lot of people in their elder years find it hard to take in vitamins through capsules and tablets. In order to make digestion easier for their bodies, producers of health supplements have made liquid versions of their medicines.

In liquid form, these vitamins and minerals can easily recharge the bio-systems in the human body to ensure that the right support is given to DNA synthesis. Most supplements that contain our much-needed vitamins and minerals do not use those that are metallic in form, and instead focuses in enzymes and amino acids. It has been proven that heavy metals such as those containing mercury and lead can cause harm to the human body.

With the early 1990's being a year of distress for those people who've been diagnosed with mineral deficiency, people have been more cautious with the food that they eat. Without the right nutrients, the body is weaker and is more likely to contract diseases.

As more and more people in the United States struggle to keep their finances intact, producers of liquid vitamins and minerals have also made their products available in the most reasonable prices. This way, a lot of people can benefit from the uses of different bodily nutrients. - 17273

Body Building and How to Avoid Injuries

By Mike Tennison

A lot of people are starting to take up bodybuilding and fitness modeling. To attain the desired goals requires determination and consistent progress. As a result, however, a lot of people are suffering injuries. This article looks at preventing those injuries

Bodybuilding involves regular stimulation of the body's muscles to promote muscle increase in size. However, in order to get those steady gains and regular growth we also have to stimulate healthy adaptation of the body's tendons, ligaments and nerves.

Ligaments and tendons are particularly rigid and inelastic strips of fibrous tissue that can particulalry easily damaged if pushed over their physical capabilities. Working on them slowly will allow them to adapt and strengthen and prevent tearing. This will enable you to increase your ability to keep a workout program

The pre-workout stretching program is an especially important aspect of the adaptation plan. Many programs such as those found in the Truth About Abs Review advise on such a recommendation. This aspect should not be left out if you are to avoid tearing. It requires at least 30 seconds of good stretching to get an adequate stretch.

It is a particularly good plan to promote the flow of blood to the muscles and ligaments with a pre-workout cardio session. This increases the inflow of nutrients and oxygen to the muscles and ligaments and prepares them for the workout exercises.

During the workout regime it is ideal to have alongside another training partner to assist whilst using the weights. When you reach the level of exhaustion, your training or spot partner can assist you to lift the weight and avoid injury. This can help prevent excessive straining the exercisedmuscles and assists in helping to prevent overstretching the tendons and muscles due to the weights pulling the muscles beyond the normal total range of movement.

There is a lot of debate as to whether a longer duration of time between each set of exercises to reduce injury. The main problem with this advice is that we do still need to stimulate the muscles and taking ninety to one hundred and twenty seconds between sets is often considered an optimal period of time. This duration of time helps also to keep you focused.

The post workout time is also a particulalry important area to focus upon in injury prevention. This is a very important time to particularly on a stretching program as the tendons and ligaments are now warm and more flexible and as suchare able to benefit more from these stretching routines.

During the recovery time, muscles, ligaments and tendons require optimal amounts of protein, glucose and nutrients to recover and adapt to the workouts. It is during this time when muscle hypertrophy and increases in size occur. The inflow of nutrients to the ligaments and tendons which will also increase their strength of them over the long term and reduce the chances of damage and injury.

With magazines full of pictures of people with rippling abs and big muscular chest pectoral muscles it is with no surprise that many more people are starting bodybuilding and doing weight training to increase muscle size. The result of this, however, is that there are many more muscular injuries. Keeping to advice explained in this article may assist you to lower the risk of injury. - 17273

Burn Your Tummy Fat Away Naturally

By Frank Powell

Had a baby? Dealt with stress? Metabolism starting to slow down? If so, you may be dealing with the same problem I have " how to get rid of tummy fat. It seems no matter how many times I commit myself to this diet or that one, even if I lose some weight, I still have trouble trying to get rid of tummy fat. It has got to be the most difficult type of fat to lose. The problem with tummy fat is that you cant get rid of tummy fat by trying any one thing alone. Getting rid of tummy fat requires use of a combination of techniques. Girl, its time for a fitness and nutritional program.

Many people hope that if they just lose enough weight they can get rid of tummy fat. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Fat in this area is usually harder to lose than in any other area, because our bodies are programmed to store fat in this region first. Additionally, few exercises adequately target the region enough to blast the fat that resides there. This is opposed to let's say, excess arm flab, which you can tone fairly easily by performing arm exercises.

To do this effectively, the overall number of calories eaten in a day must be reduced. By burning more calories than you take in, your body automatically uses its stored up fat as a source of energy. Try to reduce your daily calories by 10-20%. If for example, you eat a 2,000 calorie a day diet, you should try to reduce it to a 1,600-1,800 calorie one.

This will be enough to keep your metabolism functioning well while still forcing your body to burn through fat. To help keep your metabolism working quickly you should break up your large meals into smaller meals and snacks. If you eat 6 or 7 meals spread throughout the entire day, your metabolism will always be burning something off. Additionally, you'll be less likely to overeat because you will never be allowing your body to become starved. It is also better not to eat too few calories (under 1,000, for example) per day. While numerically you would think this would lead to faster weight loss, in reality, your body will think it is starving, and will attempt to save every calorie possible, which can lead to faster weight gain later.

Although this new diet will definitely help you get rid of tummy fat, you'll need to support it with exercise as well. Rather than piling on the sit-ups and crunches to target your belly area, try exercises that more effectively reduce belly fat while increasing abdominal muscles. A combination of stabilization, bodyweight and free weight exercises allows a much wider range of motion, helping effectively to stimulate what counts"muscle growth.

The truth is, in order to get rid of tummy fat; you have to work out your whole body so it burns off calories. A mixture of cardio and weightlifting is optimal. Find a good workout plan and eat the right foods. You will build muscle and burn off your calories. This way not only will you get rid of tummy fat, but you will end up with a good-looking body as well.

Now you've learned how to rid of that tummy fat, and are on the way to the slimmer you that you've been wanting for so long. Once you achieve it, make sure you keep it! While you don't need to diet in terms of eating low-calorie every day, hopefully you will continue to use some of the same tricks, such as to eat smaller portions, but more meals, to help keep your metabolism burning strongly, and keep your hunger down so you are not tempted to overeat. Also, be sure to drink plenty of fluids, as often the body's signal for thirst is misinterpreted as the signal for hunger. - 17273

What Is The Best Fat Burning Protein Diet?

By Bobbie Smite ( Br. Bob )

As you may have heard, it is essential to consume protein to maintain a healthy diet. Protein is the key building block for many body tissues and other elements such as enzymes, skin, hair, nails, bones, and connective and muscle tissue. Protein makes up anywhere from 15-20 percent of the average persons body weight, and it is important to maintain this percentage in order live a healthy lifestyle.

It is important to consult your physician or other healthcare professionals to know what amount of protein is recommended for you specifically. However, for the majority of people the recommended daily intake is around 50 grams a day, based on a 2,000-calorie diet. Of course, some people may require more or less protein depending on various personal aspects such as diet, amount of exercise, age and weight. Some groups who might require more protein than average are people with chronic illnesses or those prone to get sick including senior citizens, and bariatric, renal, cancer, and surgical patients. Athletes, body builders, and anyone who exercises heavily on a regular basis will require more protein to build and maintain muscle. The major sources of protein are found in foods such as meats, poultry, tofu, and eggs. Protein can also be found in dairy products such as milk, cheese, and yogurt.

For those who need extra protein, it can be hard to obtain the required amount through food consumption alone. Therefore, they result to using protein supplements such as protein powders. Protein powders are powdery mixtures of dietary supplements and other ingredients such as whey, whey isolate, isopure, calcium caseinate, and creatine. They are a very good source of protein because they are easy to consume and digest. The protein powder is mixed with liquid such as milk or water to make a protein shake. You can make a tasty protein shake by adding fruit or yogurt and milk. You can get the same amount or more of protein by drinking a protein shakes as eating a steak dinner, but you spend half the time.

Have you heard of another form of protein supplements called liquid proteins? Liquid proteins can be made from collagen hydrolysate, or a fruit enzyme called predigested papain. Liquid proteins are protein molecules that have been broken down into free amino acids and polypeptides, which increases your protein absorption. Liquid proteins can be easily and unnoticeably mixed in with assorted foods and beverages. There are a few brands of liquid proteins availale in the marketplace nowadays. To name just a few, Pro-Stat, Isapro, Proteinex and, IsoPure. The chief benefits to liquid proteins are they allow vast amounts of good protein in a much smaller amount of substance.

If you do not like the idea of protein shakes or liquid protein you can seek additional protein in other nutritional supplements. Boost Plus and Ensure Plus are a lower quality of dietary shakes with protein, but they are more convient. Open and drink. Another way to find protein is in protein bars. Protein bars are tasty and convenient for on-the-go protein uptake. All the same, a major disadvantage of protein bars is they are frequently real high in extra fats, sugars and calories. - 17273

Holistic Medicine Practitioners

By Susy K Esquire

The concept of holistic medicine is using natural methods, procedures and therapies to help heal the body as one unitary system. Holistic medicine has been practiced in many forms and in virtually all parts of the world. There is the concept of the medicine man, shaman or healer. In the absence of the scientific method, most medical treatments were practiced with a holistic or systems viewpoint.

Each culture throughout the world had different theories of medical healing. Many of these practices have not been validated through studies by scientific medical methods. It is certainly not because they are invalid, but because of economics. Undertaking a large study takes a lot of money and requires a way to recuperate this investment.

Holistic medicine is a rather broad descriptive term for a healing philosophy. Holistic medicine includes healing traditions that promote the protection and restoration of health based on a systems perspective of the body. This is the foundation of many of the traditional medical practices throughout the world.

One of the top health problems in the United States is back pain. It is estimated that over $50 billion a year is spent on the treating and diagnosing of back related problems. Chiropractors have grown tremendously in this market for treating the spine. Insurance companies are now beginning to cover many of these chiropractic treatments.

The chiropractic industry originated in ancient Egypt. The techniques and traditions of chiropractic medicine have changed through time. However, the focus is on using natural treatments and therapies to restore the health of the back. Many techniques are used including traction, electrical stimulation and massage chair therapy.

Massage therapy is another alternative form of holistic medicine. It uses different movements and pressures on muscles and soft tissue areas. This form of treatment helps to reduce stiffness, tension and relieve pain. There are many different forms of massage therapy found throughout the world.

The use of acupoints is another traditional medical practice originating in China. In ancient Chinese medicine acupoints were used to stimulate and restore health in the body. Two schools of practice evolved from the use of acupoints. One branch is acupressure and the other branch is acupuncture.

Acupuncture uses small needles directed at the acupoints. They use of needles is painless as the acupoints do not have nerve endings. Acupressure is another alternative form of stimulation of the acupoints. Acupressure uses pressure and movement on the acupoints to activate them.

Many of these treatments are now being combined into many chiropractic and medical environments. Just as globalization is making the world smaller, many medical and traditional treatments are being combined in successful ways. This is an important step of validation for many of these holistic methods.

A better balance is now being struck between Western medical science and traditional holistic medicine. For almost a century, Western medicine has shunned traditional medicine. Now it is beginning to be integrated as valid practices. Many of these practices simply have not been studied to date.

One of the most important validating trends for holistic medical practices is acceptance by the insurance industry. Many forms of chiropractic medicine are now being accepted and paid for by health insurance providers. Many of these forms of treatment are being used especially in the relief of back pain. - 17273

The Best Way to Develop a Wide, Muscular Back

By Ricardo d Argence

It never ceases to amaze me how incredibly misguided the vast majority of the population is in the gym. Everyone is desperate for that wide, powerful and muscular physique, yet very few understand how to properly channel their efforts to get there.

And if you are not training your back in the right way because that's an area you cannot check in the mirror or because you think it's just doesn't worth the effort, then its clear that you doesn't know how important that area is.

70% of your upper body muscle mass resides in the back area! Nothing can replace the upper body thickening effect of big, bulging lats and a set of wide, tall trapezius muscles. That's how important your back is. I am, of course, talking about the major muscles of the back: the lats, traps, spinal erectors, rhomboids and lower back.

If you want to succed and have a wide back, just follow these simple steps.

1) Deadlifts. The deadlift will work you from finger to neck to toe and is irreplaceable in developing strong, thick back muscles. The deadlift will stimulate growth throughout the entire back complex and should be the cornerstone of your routine.

2) A vertical pulling movement. These exercises mainly target the lat muscles and will help you to attain that wide, v-tapered look from behind. You can try with lat pulldowns, v-bar pulldowns and chin-ups.

3) Horizontal pulling movement. There are a ton of different rowing movements to choose from: bent over barbell rows, dumbbell rows, seated machine rows and cable rows just to name a few.

4) A shrugging movement. While not quite as important as the above mentioned lifts, a shrugging movement should still be performed at the end of the workout to target the upper traps and develop that mountainous, diamond-shaped look from behind. A basic barbell or dumbbell shrug will do the trick.

Perform 2 sets of 5 to 7 reps of deadlifts, overhand chin-ups and bent over barbell rows and 2 sets of 10 to 12 reps of barbell shrugs. That's all.

It may not seem like a lot, but as long as you take every set to muscular failure and focus on quality rather than quantity, this routine provides more than enough stimulation for maximum back growth. I've used this same routine for many years and continue to see steady progress in both back size and strength.

What about specific routines for the chest? What about the biceps, triceps and shoulders? How about the thighs, calves and abs? Don't worry, I will write about them in future articles. - 17273

Two Powerful Herbs That Have Been Effective In Curing PCOS and Ovarian Cysts.

By Crystal Adeyemi

Is there a cure for PCOS is a common question that people ask and the answer is Yes. Mix together three simple ingredients - good nutrition, regular physical exercise, and natural herbs and you will eliminate the signs and symptoms of PCOS and Ovarian Cysts.

Herbs in particular are extremely useful in the treatment of PCOS, because they are much gentler on the body, have fewer side effects than synthetic drugs and can be used for sustained periods of time.

Two powerful herbs that have been used for generations and shown very promising effects are:

1. Agnus Castus (Vitex/Chastetree Berry): This herb has a direct effect on the pituitary gland. This gland is involved in regulating hormone production and the menstrual cycle.

It is an adaptogen, which means that whether you suffer from a low level of one hormone or an excess of another, you can take Vitex and this herb will regulate the pituitary gland to achieve optimum levels of the hormone.

This herb is particularly useful to those with low levels of progesterone as it restores it to normal levels. Low progesterone levels can cause miscarriage, so vitex can help prevent this from happening.

Virtex has a few side effects that you need to be aware of - the most noticeable being digestive a mild rash and digetsive upsets.

Vitex should be taken for a period of several months in order to help with the cure for PCOS and ovarian cysts.

The typical recommended dose of Vitex is organic tincture is 1 teaspoon, 3 times a day for 3 or 4 months. This herb can be taken daily for up to 18 continuous months, unless pregnancy occurs.

Please consult your doctor if this is something that you think would help you.

2. Garcinia Cambogia (Also known as Brindall Berries)

This small tropical fruit is also known as Malabar tamarind. It comes from central Asia and contains HCA (hydroxyl-citric-acid). This Acid enables carbohydrate to be turned into useable energy instead of being deposited as fat.

This herb can also be used as part of the cure for PCOS because it helps to suppress appetite, reduce sugar cravings and insulin resistance, and inhibit the formation of fat and cholesterol.

This herb is readily available in capsule form and you should be able to get some from good health stores.

One thing to bear in mind is that our bodies react to things in different way and these commonly used herbs in the cure for pcos may not have the same effect on you as they have had on others. - 17273

Eat More For Weight Loss

By Mary Mack

That's a dificult one to get your head around, isn't it? Lose weight by eating MORE? It contradicts all that we have been led to believe about weight loss.

However, once you can see how our bodies process food, and how this is controlled by our brains, the subject gets a lot easier to grasp.

There are a lot of misunderstandings about how to lose weight effectively, and about how we put it on in the first place, and why it stays on. The well-known diet programs give no information about the root causes of how the body stores and burns fat.

The main enemy for dieters has always been seen as the food we eat, and the solution as how to eat less. But food is not the central issue, and eating less will not solve your problem.

If you did a survey, very few people would believe that it's possible to change your body in 11 days - by losing 9 pounds of fat. Dieting is regarded as a long, drawn-out affair.

However, these figures have been achieved, over and over. These numbers are typical of what you can expect when you start.

To simplify it, the system works because of what happens when we eat. There are 2 types of hormones produced - a fat-burning type and a fat-storing type.

And the production of these hormones can be controlled " more of the fat-burning type can be produced, less of the fat storage type, by consuming certain specific foods.

It's a very clever system - controlling our fat-processing hormones through food. By eating certain foods (and in the correct order), you can "signal" those fat-burning hormones to work for you.

For the system to work, you must eat more than 3 times a day, and eat the correct food using the right pattern. This can be difficult to grasp, but its the critical part of it.

There's no doubt that the system gets results. Probably the most attractive thing about it is the speed it works at - you see results in days. And it won't stress you out. - 17273

Is A Body Cleanse Diet Expensive

By Ron Cripps

If you are thinking about purchasing or starting on a body cleanse treatment, you should consider these facts before you commit your time and money.

Do you really require a body cleanse detox diet?

Is there any distinct reason you think you want a body cleanse or do you truly want to stay well and in good physical shape? Going all the way through a body cleanse because you dont feel well lately may be a decent idea, but if you are in acute pain or illness, then its in all probability too late to take care of it with just a body detox. In those cases you should better ask for medical counsel before you decide on a treatment.

On the other hand, if you feel completely well, then you probably dont need it at all, and you would be better off by merely sticking to a healthier lifestyle, refraining from alcohol and tobacco, doing exercise regularly and drinking water.

What benefits are there on a detox diet?

When it comes to health, its very challenging to quantify benefits. Still, endeavor to get a body cleanse treatment that is as specialized as possible. Provisions that are too broad or difficult to determine mean that they can sell you pretty much anything without any accountability. After all, how can you measure benefits like feel better?

How Much Will A Body Cleanse Cost?

Find out the costings before you start the detox diet, plus any extras that they might charge. Sometimes, the fee only includes the actual body cleanse treatment, but as you go forward, there are little hidden extras, such as patches, pills, towels, soaps, etc., that add up to the bill. If you make yourself aware of these costs beforehand, you will be able to determine whether you participate in them or not. Be aware however, if you get charged for such services with no warning, it may possibly turn your body cleanse event into a unpleasant one.

Can You Trust The information About Body Cleanse Diets?

Only if youve been directed to a clinic by a specialist you know, Id advise you not to take body cleanse treatments at a place just because it catches your attention. Ask you friends or relatives that have in fact taken body cleanse treatments about their experience and where they took them.

In conclusion, you should also bear in mind not taking a treatment at all. If you can keep away from tobacco and alcohol, drink half a gallon of water a day and do physical exercise everyday, then you probably shouldnt be looking for a body cleanse treatment. Of course, I know that such a lifestyle is easier said than done, so if you dont come up with the willpower, then be prepared to out lay some money. - 17273
