Eating to build muscle is an important part of your bodybuilding program. Eating food that helps build muscle will ensure that you are not wasting all that hard work you are doing in the gym.

Lifting weights in the gym forced your muscles to work, but guess what? Working your muscles uses considerable energy, and energy is supplied by your food. Correct nutrition also helps heal muscle injury that often occurs while you are working out. You may not even know you have caused injury to your muscles, but your body knows, and your body needs fuel from food that helps build muscle in order to repair that muscle.

Food that helps build muscle ? what it is? Well, to begin with, protein. Protein is probably the most important nutritional component in a muscle building program. You probably thought the most important component was cutting out fat, in order to reduce your body fat, didn't you? Well, it is not. Protein is essential. Without protein, your body withers away to nothing. So make sure you include protein foods that build muscle such as chicken, lean beef, eggs, fish (don't like fresh fish? Figuring out how much protein you should be eating can be tricky. Too much protein is bad for your health, and puts a strain on your system. Whey, in its raw liquid form, contains lactose, fat and cholesterol. So before spray drying if somebody consumed whey protein it also meant one would take in a significant amount of lactose and fat. Sometime in the mid-80's two processes were discovered that could concentrate the protein content of the liquid stream, then spray dried to remove the water. One was ion-exchange and the other was micro-filtration. Both these methods consisted of removing the non-protein components so they could be spray dried into a highly concentrated whey protein powder.

Two whey protein powders were named: Whey Protein Concentrate and Whey Protein Isolate. Whey Protein Concentrate has a protein content of about 80% and Whey Protein Isolate has a protein content of 90%. New technology developed in 2005 can now isolate whey protein in excess of 95%.Whey protein is a complete protein, which means it contains all the essential amino acids needed for muscle growth and repair from stressful events, i.e. resistance training, endurance training, life-stressors.

Whey is made up of many protein fractions. The main two are Beta-Lactoglobulin and Alpha-Lactalbumin. These two proteins alone make up 75% of the protein content in whey. Other protein fractions include Glycomacropeptide, Lactoferrin, Bovine Serum Albumin, Immunoglobulins, Lactoperoxidase, Lysozyme, Relaxin, Gamma-globulins, Lactollin and B-Microglobulin. Fructose Diet - Is it Sweet or Sour?

The fructose diet, sometimes referred to as the Shangri-la diet, was made popular by Seth Roberts, Ph.D professor at the University of California at Berkeley. He reportedly used himself as a lab rat and tried the fructose diet on himself.

Roberts believes in the Set Point theory, in which each person has a control system built into their bodies that dictates how much fat he or she should carry. He explains that "your set point is the weight your body is aiming you toward." When your weight is less than your set point your feel hungry. When it's about the same you feel comfortable. When your weight is over your set point you feel full.

He states that "our set point is determined by the flavors that we eat." And after much experimentation, Roberts allegedly found a way to trick the set point. The solution he says is to drink unflavored sugar water between meals or unflavored flavorless oils between meals, more specifically granulated fructose and unflavored canola or extra light olive oil.

According to Roberts, for best results drink 2-5 tablespoons per day of this concoction 1 hour before your meals. Taking it 1 hour before your meals will give you that feeling of fullness. He claims that this formulation has allowed him to lose 40 lbs.

According to Roberts, these two compounds give you calories without flavor and your brain doesn't get the signals to raise your set point. Roberts also claims that his fructose diet stops you from thinking about junk food or react very strongly when you see your favorite foods. Food basically stops being attractive to you and ultimately you'll eat less. According to him, the fructose diet has helped him lose 40 lbs. and kept it off.

His book, The Shangri-La Diet is full of testimonials from people who swear by his diet. But there are also a few detractors who believe the fructose diet is not safe. The controversy centers around fructose itself. There have been many scientific studies that link fructose to insulin resistance as well as raising triglyceride levels.

One study done by the University of Lausanne's Department of Physiology in Switzerland on seven normal men, showed that fructose actually caused insulin resistance in them.

The Shangri-La or fructose diet may not be so sweet after all. Even if it works, it is hard to ignore the negative effects of fructose. Before trying the fructose diet, it may be prudent to do some research on fructose to get all the facts. - 17273
