Obesity, Don't Only Blame Your Genes

While genes play a role in your body shape, their role should not be used as an excuse to ignore diet and exercise, or else you will never lose weight.

Even though your genes control how many fat cells you have in your body, doesn't mean that you need to fill them with food. Losing weight can be easier than you think, but you must commit a significant amount of effort and hard work in order to be healthy and sculpt your body.

There are some basic body types the thin, lean ectomorph who has little body fat at any time, the athletic and well muscled mesomorphs who can lose fat easily and bulk up quickly, and the endomorph who stores fat. What is discouraging to many people with an endomorph body type is that they can gain weight while eating a regular, healthy diet. Healthy eating designed for children sometimes does not hit the target.

Resorting to bribery, threats or manipulation can be done by parents just to persuade their child to eat healthy food. But there is an easier way to do this and parents would not need to employ such dirty tactics on children.

There are seven quick tips to help you succeed with healthy eating.

1. Begin as early as possible. It can be harder to do if you waited longer. The taste buds of children may be ruined by sweet treats and when that happens, it is really hard to get them to eat Brussels sprouts and broccoli. You can opt to choose tip # 4 if you have waited to long ? be firm ? you need to be ready for the negative reaction you may get from your kids that can last for a few days.

2. Store a variety of healthy foods. It keeps them from being attached to a single food or food group. Yes they can have their own favorites, but presenting them with a variety can help convince them to like other food tastes. A piece of warning though, unhealthy food stocked in the house is definitely not included in the plan. Junk foods have to be banned.

3. Bring together the foods that they like with the food they despise. Do it like this: stir fry onions with zucchini, broccoli, carrots and snow peas instead of having them eat only a platter of steamed broccoli. Cutting the veggies into small pieces will assure you that they get some carrots with the zucchini.

4. Be fervent! If you cannot impose firm-love, your plan will fail. You will need to inform your child that this is what you cooked for dinner and that is it. There is no other available food. If you only have healthy food in your home, it can work. Since there are no other options and they get hungry, they have no other choice but to eat what you served.

5. Do not permit your kid to go near people who will sabotage your plan. Some people just seem to find contentment over the fact that they can offer your kid sweet treats. And yes, even your doctors and dentists do this. What you can do is to teach your child to say "No thank you". If a close relative is doing the same thing, you may threaten them you will stop visiting if they won't stop.

6. Inhibit your children from watching commercial TV. Yes you got it right. Around 95% of our population gets nutritional education from these commercials, and kids will see junk food ads while watching their favorite kid shows. It can really have a big influence on their food cravings.

7. Be a good model. This is apparently the most important tip. Do not expect your child to give up on candy and ice cream if you can't do it yourself. Convince them to eat fish, vegetables and whole grains by showing them that you are eating it as well. At an early age, you will be their role model, so might as well be a good one.

If you have not been a good role model, then you have no right to get angry over the poor eating habits of your child, obesity, ADHD and you will often be absent from work when they get sick.
