The Disadvantages Of Reverse Osmosis Water Purifiers

Reverse osmosis water filters were the only method that was once available to provide purified water to your home. Better, more cost effective and efficient systems have since been introduced, and yet water companies still push the old system over the newer technology. There are many disadvantages to reverse osmosis systems, as we highlight below.

Why Are They Still Sold?

Although there are far cheaper and more effective water filters available on the market today, some people are still led to believe that a reverse osmosis system is the best way to filter the water to their homes.

Newer technology allows whole house filtering systems for a fraction of that cost, and gives the user all the water that passes through the system filtered and ready to drink immediately much faster, and with vastly reduced running costs.

Waste

It is not easy for any salesman to hide the fact that gallon upon gallon of water using reverse osmosis is wasted, in order to produce just a few gallons suitable to drink.

For instance, between 40 and 90 gallons of water is wasted for every 5 gallons of purified water. That is an unacceptable and flagrant waste of this precious resource, especially galling as there are other systems that don't waste a drop! Indeed, some householders have had to upgrade their septic system in order to accommodate all this discarded water.

Power Bills

These systems take power to run, and given the waste water to drinkable water ratio, it is clear that they will be using electricity at a high rate. Not ideal given the increasing price of electricity, along with the higher impact on the environment.

So Does Reverse Osmosis Make Water Safe To Drink?

The big question! With all this power usage and waste-water sloshing around the system, does reverse osmosis make water safe to drink?

Well, the answer is that this system makes the water safer to drink, but not necessarily safe. It does a competent job certainly, but no better than the considerably cheaper systems employing more economical methods to filter water without all the whistles and bells whilst doing so.

Other disadvantages of reverse osmosis systems are their removal of healthy minerals and failure to remove some of the harmful cysts and chemicals in the 'purified' water.

One manufacturer of such equipment has freely admitted that these units are only designed to clean up the waters aesthetic properties. They don't in fact act as a barrier against waterborne micro-biological and toxic chemicals.

One other very small but very important disadvantages of reverse osmosis filters is that they can also remove some or all of the minerals found in water. The researchers found that the group that took the CLA supplement lost weight prior to the Christmas holiday season and maintained their weight over the holidays.

During the pre-holiday period the group taking the CLA supplements lost weight while the control group gained a total of 1.5 pounds of fat mass. Not surprisingly both the CLA group and the placebo group exercised less over Christmas. However, even with less exercise, the CLA supplement group reduced their total body fat mass. Over the period of study period, the CLA group lost a total of 2.2 pounds of fat. As an added bonus, the subjects who took the CLA supplement found that there was a noticeable belly fat loss. Losing belly fat is a really great health benefit as it is belly fat that increases the risk of developing heart disease.

There are a few different types of CLA supplements. Research showed that a mixture of two common forms held the most promise for fat loss. Happily, this mixed form is easy to find. Tonalin CLA is the only easily available and clinically proven form of CLA. It was used in the above described studies.

Do NOT Believe Every Grow Tall Scam You Come Across

There are many sites out there that try to scam people out of their time and money by selling DVDs and instruction manuals about exercises to grow tall. Three store bought and readily available acai juice blends containing unspecified and presumably varied concentrations of a?a? juice and/or acai pulp were compared for in vitro antioxidant capacity against other commonly known antioxidants including tea, six types of pure fruit juice, red wine and pomegranate juice. The results are surprising at first glance. The antioxidant capacity of the acai juice blends was approximately equal to that of black cherry or cranberry juice, and was higher than that of apple juice, tea and orange juice. The antioxidant capacity of the acai juice blends was actually ranked poorer than that of Concord grape juice, pomegranate juice, blueberry juice, and red wine. How does this make me feel about Rachel Ray and acai? Acai juice blends are significantly better for you than orange or apple juices, but not as good antioxidant-wise as either red wine or pomegranate juice. Simply put it still means that readily available acai juice blends provide a health benefit.

I have seen these blends and there is no telling whether they are 90% acai or simply apple juice with a splash of acai. The problem with this study is that it uses juices with unspecified quantities of acai. The above experiment was done on commercially available acai berry juices. In fairness to Rachel Ray and acai she promotes a specific type of acai juice which might have a greater concentration of acai. - 17273
