Weight Loss Pills - Do They Work?

With the New Year fast approaching, you can bet losing weight will be at the top of everyone's New Year resolutions list and health foods stores will be well stocked with weight loss pills in anticipation of the after holiday rush. But are people wasting their money on weight loss pills?

Most reputable companies put out decent products that work to some degree, but not to the extent most people think they do. In the early 90's ephedra hit the market with a lot of fanfare. It promised to burn fat like no other compound. And for the most part, it lived up to that promise.

Unfortunately the side effects far out-weighed its fat burning power. There were a few cases where ephedra was blamed for people dying from heart attacks. The heart pounding stimulating affect was difficult for people to handle and ephedra is no longer available.

Are there any compounds that work as well as ephedra?

Ephedra was a one of a kind product and may never (save for possibly one) be duplicated for its fat burning power.

What is this new natural substance?

This all natural compound is derived from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis and Heartwood of Acacia. There more common names are Chinese skullcap and "Black catechu".

How does it work?

There are two obesity markers in the blood stream that this natural compound substantially decreases. Chronically obese people have high levels of these two markers. A double blind clinical study was conducted by scientists at JSS Medical Research, Inc., in Montreal, Canada. Participants were between the ages of 40 and 75. This age group normally has the most difficult time losing weight. None of the subjects were given any physical activity or dietary advice.

The results were quite impressive. Subjects taking the natural compound lost an average of 7 percent of their bodyweight, while those not taking the natural compound did not lose any weight at all.

One can only imagine their results if they combined a sensible diet plan with a regular exercise program.

Lead Contamination is Preventable with Epoxy Pipe Lining

The primary material for water pipes in major U.S. cities, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was lead. Its durability and malleability made it a very popular choice for pipe material. Eventually galvanized steel and copper would replace lead, and copper pipe would eventually become the most popular material used in home water service and distribution in mid to late 20th century construction.

Lead contamination was the top source of lead-related health issues before the hazards of ingesting it were known. The cause was pipe corrosion and erosion, and it raised stillbirth and infant mortality rates. Other plumbing or pipe problems are much easier to spot, but if you?re not testing for lead in your water, you?ll never know it?s there. If you have lead in your water, it?s generally because of one (or more) of these: lead-based solder which used to be the primary way to join copper pipes, a lead service line pipe linking your house to the city or town water main, and brass (or chrome-plated brass) faucets. The U.S. Congress banned the use of lead solder containing greater than 0.2% lead in 1986. It also limited the lead composition of pipes, faucets, and all other plumbing materials to 8.0%.? As a result of this legislation, ?lead-free? brass legally can contain no more than 8% lead and plumbing installed before 1986 possibly contain higher levels of lead.

In older structures, lines from the city/town water main to the home or building may be a lead pipe . Unless your piping has been upgraded in the past 40 years, it is probably galvanized pipe which does not require lead solder for joining. Faucets should be checked to see if they are brass or chrome-plated, a licensed plumber should be able to tell you if they are. Treat Psychosis with Fish Oil

Fish oil as a treatment for psychosis is a fresh topic for research.

A lot of scientists are really impressed by what they are now discovering, and most probably you will be too.

According to the Medline Plus online encyclopaedia, psychosis is defined as the "loss of contact with reality. This typically includes delusions (false ideas about what's taking place or who one is) and hallucinations (seeing or hearing things which aren't there)."

Psychosis is a very general definition of a mental disorder and it can include conditions like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, hallucinations, dementia, unfounded fears, extreme excitement, illusions, abnormal emotions, confusion and delusions.

The research conducted in the Journal of Affective Disorders reveal that "Major depressed subjects showed significantly lower total omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids?than minor depressed subjects and healthy controls." (Vol. 26, No. 38, 35-46)

In other words: a diet rich in fish oil fatty acids will make a person less depressed.

Another research conducted amongst patients with major depressive disorders was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry and it concludes that, "Highly significant benefits of the addition of the omega-3 fatty acid compared with placebo were found by week 3 of treatment." (Vol. 159:477-479)

The implication: all you need is 3 weeks and you will get the health benefits that fish oil provides.

The Archives of General Psychiatry published a research by Harvard University which found that, "Omega 3 fatty acids were well tolerated and improved the short-term course of illness in this preliminary study of patients with bipolar disorder." (Vol. 56 No. 5)

In other words: Patients with bipolar disorder had their conditions improved after taking fish oil.

Another research reported in the American Journal of Psychiatry concludes, "The results of this study suggest that EPA may be a safe and effective form of monotherapy for women with moderately severe borderline personality disorder." (Vol. 160:167-169)

In other words: Fish oil can help women with extreme personality disorders.

The department of psychiatry at the UK University of Sheffield also has a research and they reported in the Journal of Affective Disorders, "The findings [of their study] raise the possibility that depressive symptoms may be alleviated by omega 3 PUFA [polyunsaturated fatty acid] supplementation." (Vol. 48(2-3):149-55)

The implication: A supplement of good quality fish oil helps depressed individuals.

That is the summary of the benefits that fish oil can provide as treatment to psychosis and minor depressions.

Little Known Ways to Encourage Your Kids to Eat Fish

Have you ever considered yourself committing child abuse even once in your life? This does not mean beating your child or whatever way you may describe it. Because if not giving your children a regular dose of fish is a form of abuse, then you are guilty.

Well, maybe because you really just don't want fish in your dishes. But that does not mean you can escape conviction. You are already grown up. You don't need to get away from the consequences of your actions because you know that you are what you eat. But your children do not know yet the consequences of not eating fish. And because you know the possible problems by doing so, it is almost a sin not letting them have what their body needs.

It's time to cut the crap. Come to think of it, it would be best if you will simply do something about it. That is, learn how to encourage your kids to eat fish.

Based from experience, I can say that the only way to have your kids do what you say is to act it up on your own. That is, teach by example. Children tend to imitate what their parents do and this is manifested until they are in their teenage years.

And so, just as what the experts keep on saying, teach them by example and while they are still young. The message is clear - to teach your children to eat fish, you must first start eating fish. Of course, it's not easy to get used to the taste or maybe because you have not just bought a fresh one. But it should not be a problem. You can always fix them. Here's how:

People who don't like fish used to complain about its fishy taste. Of course, fish will never taste like chicken but that doesn't mean it has to be fishy. If it does, it means it is not fresh. So always go for the freshest fish there is in the market.

Try several recipes in a fish cookbook. Do this until you and your family have found the right fish recipe.

Studies show that it is best to work on mild tasting fishes first. Don't start with the salmon even if it has the highest content of omega 3 fatty acids. It's best you start with sea bass or the grouper first. Eventually, you and your family will get used to the fish taste and will soon appreciate salmon.

Start it early. Start it right. You can start introducing fish to your children as young as 6 months old by giving them fish oil. You will soon be surprised that they are craving for more. And by the time that they get to eat out with you, they will order fish more.

Alright, so your kids are old enough to know that food for them means pizza, pot pies, and TV dinners. But it does not mean that it's the end of the world. Just give them tough love and stick with what you believe in. Be firm with the meals you prepare. Feed them with fish and that's it. They will eat if they are hungry anyway.

So as to lengthen the lives of your children and to make them live a healthy life as well, you have to try out these great ideas. Eating fish does not just provide these benefits but it can also improve your child's behavior and mood. And you know you will benefit more from it.
