Colon Cleansing - Its Benefits and Side Effects

By Jessica Matias

Why Do We Need Colon Cleansing?

The removal of parasites and harmful toxins from the body is the main objective of colon cleansing. This will facilitate proper digestive process and help improve absorption of nutrients by the body. The colon is an important component in ensuring a good bowel movement. Waste and harmful toxins, the by-products of the food that we eat, should be released from the body.

The functions of the colon, a major part of the large intestine, is to absorb water and remove toxins and waste. These toxins and waste will remain inside our body if our colon does not function properly as it should.

The unreleased toxin and wastes will be circulated inside our body and will likely cause health problems. Constipation, bloating, acid reflux and hyperacidity are some of these problems. To avoid serious complications and, possibly, cancer, the colon should always be kept clean. You are advised to have your colon cleansed at least once a year.

How Can the Colon be Cleansed?

Colon cleansing can be done using a special diet or a colon cleansing equipment known as "colonic irrigation". You can consult a hydro-therapist or buy your own equipment for home use. The equipment can only clean the large intestine. This therapy involves attaching a device to the anus and then gently flushing warm water into the large intestine.

There is another colon cleansing method known as enema. It is similar to colonic irrigation but it only effectively cleanses the lower part of the intestine near the anus. It's done the same way as the irrigation whereby water is gently flushed into the intestine through the anus to clear the bowel or fecal matters.

Taking laxative is another way of cleaning the colon. Laxatives loosen the stools and aid in promoting muscle contraction in the intestines thereby initiating bowel movement. However, this can only be used in certain cases of constipation but does not remove fecal matters.

The most effective colon cleansing method known today is the oxygen-based colon cleansing. In capsule form, this cleanser is taken orally and can remove buildups of fecal matter as well as toxins. To maintain a good bowel movement, you may use it with regularity.

Colon Cleansing Benefits

A clean colon promotes good bowel movement leading to good digestion. Digestion is the process whereby the food that we eat is broken down chemically inside the body and the nutrients from those food is absorbed by the body. Discomfort or health problems arise from improper digestive process. Constipation is one such problem; so are acid reflux and hyperacidity.

Having your colon cleansed can prevent major problems such as a colon cancer. Hyperacidity, if not taken seriously, can lead to ulcer. Constipation, if it always happen, can trigger hemorrhoids which, although not serious, can cause discomfort to anyone who has it.

Colon Cleansing Side Effects

Side effects can normally be expected from colon cleansing as it involves the intake of medicines or the flushing of liquid into the intestines from our anus. Much like we can expect side effects, at times, from the medicines and drugs that we take to cure our ailments, the likelihood of side effects is also present if we remove fecal matter and toxins from our intestines.

The side effects of colon cleansing can be one or a combination of the following:

1. Diarrhea

2. Body aches

3. Head aches

4. Bloating

5. Nausea

6. Fatigue

These side effects are really very minor and bearable. You can take medicines to counter them. It is not advisable to overeat. Relax as much as possible and drink lots of water to help your digestion and colon cleansing process. Always remember that colon cleansing can help us become healthy but we have the responsibility to keep our body healthy all the time. - 17273
