Eating Habits and Tooth Color

By Shaun P. Reily

Are you a religious coffee drinker, a long-time smoker or someone who is into carbonated drinks? Then you probably have noticed that your teeth are not as white as they used to be.

There are, however, several methods available to you to begin improving your dental health and restoring the natural white shine of your smile.

To get whiter teeth, first thing you should do is be easy on your caffeine and nicotine fix. They are the main reasons for your dull teeth. Also, you need to avoid the other known causes of dull teeth, such as acidic substances like soda and strawberries. Establish continuous flow of saliva by drinking lots of water.

Vitamin C will play a vital role in your new diet so if you will want to consider adding oranges or grapefruit to your daily meals. Not only will Vitamin C from citrus fruit have a subtle natural whitening effect on your teeth, it is a powerful immune system booster and will improve your overall health. Also make you sure are getting enough calcium either from leafy green vegetables or supplements.

Finally it is very important that you floss daily. Surprisingly very few people ever make flossing a daily habit, but the results are well worth the effort and long lasting.

As for professional dentist whitening procedures, there are two common methods employed today. In the first method a resin is used to create a new, artificial layer of shine white protective coating on the tooth. The natural layer is carefully removed and the teeth are scored with microscopic grooves that allow the new layer to bond with the teeth as a perfectly fit replacement coating.

The second procedure available is called porcelain veneer bonding in which sheets of porcelain are actually implanted right over your teeth. This is the route to go if you want perfectly white teeth right from the start. Resin will fade just as fast as your natural teeth but porcelain veneers will last for years. This procedure is also of course much more expensive.

Whether you choose the at-home way or your dentist's way, what's important in picking up a teeth whitening solution to follow is your commitment to your health. While the solutions are usually expensive, you can do some things while you are saving up.

You should consider incorporating lots of helpful fruits and vegetables such as apples, celery, broccoli, spinach and carrots into your diet to build the foundation of a healthier body and teeth. - 17273
