Why Just Reducing Fat Intake Will Not Improve Your Health

By Joe Graham

If you are looking to lose weight or want to get ripped, if your are on a bodybuilding program then eating healthily is vital. Some programs fail to take this into account in which case you may find some of the foods you consume may not be particularly healthy over the long term.

Dietary fats, or lipids, are very important for two main reasons: fat has more calories per gram than protein or glucose and so are not suited if you are looking to lose body fat; fat is also responsible for increasing the level of cholesterol in the body which may increase the cardiovascular disease risk.

The good news is that the overall intake of fats in the diet has decreased over the last twenty years or so and most people realize that fat is the main villain, in the modern western diet, of the cause of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. However, there is still a lot of confusion over the differences between good fats and bad fats.

Fats in the diet are important for a number of reasons. Some are essential to normal physiological processes that go on in the body, such as linoleic acid. Many are vital for the absorption of fat soluble vitamins through the gastrointestinal tract and into the bloodstream.

There are two main types of fat found in the diet, saturated and unsaturated. Saturated fats are also known as the the bad fats and are commonly found in animal fats, especially lamb and beef. Fish fried in fat, dairy products such as milk and cheese also contain large amounts of these saturated fats.

Foods that are commonly cooked in fat, such as fast foods like burgers, contain a lot of saturated fats. These types of fats are one of the biggest culprits in the increase in triglyceride and cholesterol levels causing a rise in the incidence of disease.

Unsaturated fats or the good fats are found in higher level in certain oils such as rapeseed and soyabean oil. Replacing animal fats with these oils can be a successful approach to reducing the intake of your saturated fats. Various cooking methods such as grilling instead of frying can be employed to lower the intake of the fats also.

Reducing overall fat intake in the diet is important in reducing calorie intake and losing weight. In order to stay healthy though it is also important to look at the quality of the fats you are taking in also in order to reduce your saturated fats. A particularly healthy alternative is to consume more fruit and vegetables which can leave you feeling satisfied whilst lowering your fat intake. - 17273
