The Most Successful Weight Loss Programs

By Jeffrey Wilkins

A lot of people have been emailing us lately asking us how we grade our diet reviews, and what criteria we use to do it. There are hundreds of criteria that we use, but many of our highest rated diets all share some very common criteria and have many features in common. Let's take a look at four of our most common criteria to see how some of these diets stack up.

Allows you to eat things you normally would. Now I don't mean you can run down to the fast food joint and order 15 cheeseburgers, but a good diet will let you mix in a slice of pizza or piece of chocolate cake if you make adjustments to the rest of your meal, do extra exercise or both. We all live normal lives and in this country almost everything involves food. You cant set yourself up to fail by going on an ultra strict diet because at some point you will become frustrated and quit.

Has a sensible mixture of foods and food groups. Have you ever seen those diets where you eat one thing over and over? Yeah, maybe eating broccoli soup every meal of every day for the next six months will help you lose 20 pounds, but are you getting all the nutrition you need? Absolutely not! A good diet will factor in a good variety of foods to give you all the vitamins and nutrition you need and will keep the rest of your body healthy in the process.

Will make you work out more often. It's no secret, if you want to lose weight you need to exercise more often than you did before, no matter what you eat. Sure, eating right is a very important part of weight loss and dieting, but its equally important to get regular exercise every day or at least a few times a week. By exercising more often your muscles burn calories, and continue to burn them even when you aren't exercising. Any diet that doesn't encourage exercise is not doing you any favors. Your body needs exercise to prevent heart disease, to burn calories and to prevent the effects of aging as we all get older.

You can keep it up after the official diet ends. Most people go on a diet for a few weeks or months and when they lose the weight they eat like they normally did before they started. If you lost weight using a fad diet, then you will most likely gain back all the weight you lost and then some because the weight loss process will be reversed. A good diet will teach you to eat properly and show you how to sustain results long after the "official" diet has ended. Look for a diet that is strong in balance, exercise and sounds reasonable. If you cant see yourself sticking to a diet during and after your official diet period, don't start it, you are just setting yourself up for failure down the line. - 17273
