Muscle mass can not be achieved by intense cardio routines and eating nothing but greens. Hardcore strength training should done in a certain way to build muscle mass. You can't do it halfway, you have to things correctly for the workout to be successful.

An important side to getting toned is to eat plenty of food. You are not on a diet, you need to feed your body as it bulks up. Building up muscle will use what you eat and burn off the rest. Plenty of calories will be required to fuel those intense workouts. Protein is important, so eat foods high in it, such as tuna, lean meats like chicken and eggs. The average bodybuilder will go through 3000 calories a day, eaten in around five small meals a day. Fresh fruit and vegetables are also important, along with complex carbohydrates such as pasta or brown rice. Think of this as gas for your bodies gas tank.

Some guys make the mistake of getting so incredibly big they can not even move well anymore. Their flexibility is jeopardized, it's hard for them to raise their arms or tie their shoes! Your heart really goes out to these guys when you see them at the gym. It's fine to want to look solid and cut but what's the point when you can't do certain things you need to do anymore?

There is a belief that by using a heavier weight fewer times the muscle will be forced to build up faster as the fibers of the muscle are stressed more. You could look at like this: you can lift the weight 10 or 20 times, but everything depends on exactly how much heaviness there is to it. Do you want to use your time in the best way?
