Mediterranean Diet - Is It For You?

By Pete Smith

There are many fans of the Mediterranean diet amongst dieters and health specialists and you might like it as well because it's not that restrictive like others. Also many will like the fact that wine in this diet is encouraged, in reasonable amounts of course.

Also, a large number of health specialists are convinced that the Mediterranean diet is great for achieving a healthy body weight and is good in improving your health by lowering your blood pressure and reducing the risks of heart disease.

Is this diet really for you?

Basics of this diet are: large amounts of fresh fruits and veg, lots of vegetarian dishes made of fresh produce only, plenty of fish, poultry and small amounts of pork or beef.

From the first view it looks a great diet and it is, but unless you're not in the Mediterranean but let's say in Western Europe or US, having fresh fruits and veg all year round can cost you a lot. It depends on the season.

Another thing in Mediterranean diet that "turns off" is that olive oil is considered to be the main source of phenolic compounds. Phenolic compounds help reduce cholesterol and reduce the risk of having certain cancers but olive oil is not the only product you can get phenolic compounds from.

If phenolic compounds you're after then instead of olive oil you can source them from red grapes and red grape juice, kiwi, tomatoes, prunes and berries, apples and their juice, currants. Read grapes or their juice can easily replace the wine if you are cautious about the alcohol consumption.

Last thing that makes this diet not that great is that it takes awful lot of time. It is fine if you live slow paced lifestyle like people in the Med do but most Western world people live much faster and they don't have time to choose, prepare and cook that kind of meals.

Also it's important how we eat our meals. In the Mediterranean people have long relaxing midday breaks to enjoy their healthy meals, opposite to our fast snacking and running to the next meeting.

In conclusion, it doesn't matter if you stick to Mediterranean diet fully or just use its best elements, if you spare more time for your meals and think of what you eat a bit more, you could have a healthier body and better health. - 17273
