Nutritional Supplements: An answer to many health problems

By Angela Giles

Food is our essential source of energy and vitality. As human beings, we need to eat at regular intervals in order to replenish what the body uses up during the day.

The food that we eat contains several kinds of nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, minerals, vitamins and water. When the body receives these nutrients in the proper quantities, it is considered to be healthy, whereas, an excess or deficiency of these nutrients results in poor health. Our health then is a direct function of our diet.

Nutrition experts claim that eating fresh and whole food, rather than monotonous processed food, is the secret to good health. However, due to various factors like a stressful lifestyle and easy availability, we have become more dependent on processed food, leading to adverse effects on our health. As a result, stress- and obesity-related diseases have become more common in the world.

It is true that technology has made it possible to preserve food for a long time and made certain food items safe to consume, but it has also reduced the nutritional value of the food. Many essential vitamins and minerals are lost in food processing techniques like heating, milling and centrifugation.

Another important point is that food which is suitable for a child or a teenager is not suitable for a grown-up adult. With age, our body needs different proportions of micro- and macro-nutrients. But ignorance or habit prevents us from changing to a new diet and thus making us prone to several diseases, which can be quite easily avoided with the right nutrition.

The government publishes nutrition standards and many schools teach about nutrition to students. Despite this education, we usually tend to ignore the nutrition aspect in our diet.

Nutritional supplements offer a simple way out of this situation. These are carefully designed mixes of essential nutrients required by the body on a daily basis. Consuming these fulfill the body's needs of optimal nutrition, which as we have seen is impossible to achieve through regular diet alone.

It is not enough to take just the one vitamin or mineral that the body is lacking in. Since, all nutrients work together in ways we may not know fully; it is advisable to consume the right mix of these supplements for best health.

In addition to the right mix, the right amount, the correct balance and the right form are also essential for a good nutrition supplements program. Choose a program that is customizable for various age groups, thus providing complete health for the whole family. - 17273
