Some Helpful Facts about Cholelithiasis

By Katie A. Price

Cholelithiasis is the formation of stones in the gallbladder. These stones accumulate over time and block the normal pathway of bile within the gallbladder. Upon blockage, bile stagnation occurs which causes salt precipitates and therefore increases the amount of stones in the gallbladder. You might be wondering what causes this stone formation. Specialists have found out that stone formation is related to obesity and other conditions such as diabetes and even hypothyroidism.

Majority of patients who have cholelithiasis are women, and although there are men, the number is incomparable to that of women. Age is also a factor, especially affecting those in their forties. Experts have theorized that pregnant women are also prone to developing stones in the gallbladder. Cholesterol and bile salts are usually the things that cause the stones found in the gallbladder.

On the onset of cholelithiasis, patients will start to lose weight. They will also experience anorexia, nausea and vomiting. Because of decreased fat absorption due to the fact that the gallbladder can not function properly, fats are seen in the stool. Fats in the stool are called steatorrhea. It gives off a bad odor aside from the fact that the stools give off a different smell than usual.

With gallstones, you will notice that your skin is yellowish. This is medically termed as jaundice. You will also experience itching in some parts of your body which is probably caused by the salt precipitation. There is also a discoloration in the urine of patients with cholelithiasis. The normal color of urine is yellowish, but if with cholelithiasis, it is tea colored.

Usually, doctors would suggest you to undergo an operation called cholecystectomy. This is an invasive procedure that will remove your gallstone. Prior to the operation, you can ask your surgeon about it and its complications. This could be worrisome especially if your body is weak. Some ways to prevent post operative complications are taught to patients like deep breathing and coughing exercises. Health care providers are responsible for these teachings.

It is advisable to reduce your eating of fatty foods. If you love eating these kinds of foods such as those offered in various fast food restaurants, then better stop eating it and instead have more fruits and vegetables.
