The Shocking Truth About Prostate Vitamins

By Gerome Plunk

If you've ever had the faintest concern about your prostate and the possibility of cancer, you've probably turned to the internet to do some research. What you've immediately run into has been a confusing assortment of contradictory claims. Some articles maintain that Vitamin E will protect you. Others recommend multivitamins. Yet others, zinc or beta-carotene.

And then again, perhaps your eye will be caught by lurid headlines claiming studies have proven prostate vitamins actually cause cancer.

How can you tell which version to trust?

The media wants to capture your interest. Reporters are going to hit you with the most eye-popping headlines they can manufacture. If you take the time to check the actual data behind the stories, a simple truth emerges: a small percentage of men taking prostate vitamins did show increased incidence of prostate cancer, but there seems to be a very solid reason for the increase " one which you can easily avoid.

Beware Of Unexpected Side Effects

Karla Lawson, who submitted the paper showing the results, warns that the association between advanced cancer and extreme vitamin use is imprecise. Other experts not connected with the 2006-2007 study have put forth the theory that massive doses of vitamins and minerals actually nourish existing tumors, causing them to grow.

Its tempting to start treating yourself prophylactically if your family has a history of cancer of the prostate, especially if you are no longer young. Lawsons study seems to firmly caution against this.

The bottom line is, even if the males in your family are prone to cancer, going overboard on anything is never a good idea - particularly if a false sense of security stops you from getting the professional help you need.
