Effects Of Steroids And How To Reduce Man Boobs

By Steve Brodie

Gynecosmastia refers to large breast tissue in men coming from the Greek 'gyne' for woman and 'mastos' for breast. Without the ancient Greek jargon, most people know it as man boobs. There are different reasons behind the formation of man boobs, but the two primary causes are excess fat (the case with obese men) and hormonal imbalances.

There are natural hormone imbalances in times like adolescence. Although man boobs in adolescent males usually disappear after a while, it is not at all uncommon for them to sprout small breasts of have lumps under their nipple for a couple of years. Overweight boys are more susceptible but even active fit youngsters can experience breast development. No health risks are associated with this adolescent man boob growth, other than the social and psychological pain and stigmatisation that often goes with man boobs. Teenagers that experience breast development will often feel embarrassed about it, and feel isolated from their peers, who can sometime exacerbate the social stigmatisation, especially when sports and swimming (involving removal of the shirt) are involved.

Other causes of man boobs can come from a hormonal reaction to different types of medications, too much alcohol (especially beer) taking methamphetamines and marijuana and even from illnesses like cancer or liver disease.

One source of man boobs has been causing somewhat of an epidemic and creates man boobs that are far more persistent and permanent, sometime leaving surgery as the only option to remove the male breasts. Anabolic steroids are the big baddies when it comes to leaving behind a nice pair of man boobs on once bulging pecks - they are leading men into epidemic proportions of gynecomastia. Because steroids have such a profound effect on the hormones in your body, they have a far more drastic and fast development of man boobs than natural hormonal problems. They are also more difficult to get rid of, and man boobs from steroids that have been left unchecked for years may only be able to be treated by costly and risky male mamoplasty - not a good option.

Male breast development is quite a common side effect of steroid use. Generally the cause is from the steroids putting the testosterone and estrogen balance in the body all out of whack. Because steroids inhibit testosterone production naturally, when stopping a steroid cycle if a user doesn't add testosterone to the body the levels of estrogen will rise dramatically and a feminization of the body can occur - budding breast and shapely hips. Not really what a guy using steroids would want to look like, but that's one of the many risks involved.

After ceasing steroid use it can still take quite a while for the body to start its testosterone production and in many cases even after hormones are back to normal the breast do budge. Man boobs from other causes are easy to deal with compared to man boobs that come from steroid use.

The ideal solution would of course be to not use steroids at all, and indeed if the other risk like shrunken testicles are taken into consideration, they should be avoided like the plague. Those who are determined to use steroids can try and stop breast development by taking estrogen blockers. Body builders often use estrogen blockers, however there are not sufficient studies on the side effects to know for sure they may not just cause another kind of problem further down the track.

Given the proper treatment, man boobs are very receptive and if you aren't on steroids you may be just a few months from getting back your manly chest, because there are plenty of options for trying to reduce man boobs. If you have steroid induce gynecomastia it may take a bit more time, however you should try every natural remedy prior to surgery, as it can be a costly as risky procedure that may or may not cure the problem. - 17273
