The Health of Your Pet Bird

By Emmanuel J. Hood

Birds can sometimes be a little more difficult to comprehend than a cat or a dog, and sometimes that can lead to serious issues. Health concerns in a bird could be respiratory infections, or even excessive molting just to name a few. If you take care of your bird properly however, a lot of said issues can be avoided. Some things that you should do to keep your bird in good health is feed it the proper foods and go to the veterinarian on a regular basis. This article will outline a few more methods of keeping your bird healthy, so keep reading.

The first thing that you need to understand is that all birds are slightly different. You can't treat a dog, cat, hamster, gerbil, or mouse in the same way that you would treat a bird and vice versa. Birds have different dietary requirements, and you need to make sure that you learn everything that a bird could need, as well as the specific requirements of your particular bird.

There are a lot of pet products out there that won't be so good for your bird, and the reason they exist is because they're not very regulated. Once you learn more about your bird and what could be harmful to it, then you will begin to understand what you can and can't buy for it.

Every bird will need to start with a good quality diet that provides the correct balance of nutrients. For some birds, this is easy. Pre-packaged pellet feeds with all the nutrients they need are readily available. For others, there are only low quality seed mixes (while not all seed mixes are bad, many have problems) or the basic diet will require supplementation in order to provide everything your pet needs.

Bad diet will make the bird vulnerable to infections, and even excessive growth of certain body parts such as it's beat and nails. It may also end up losing feathers, and as you're going to find out birds are extremely delicate. They may not look sick until the problem is progressed very far, and that's why you need to have regular checkups and good veterinarian that can help you with these problems as they arise.

If you see a change in attitude, an increase in sleep, discharge around the nostrils or beak, clicking sounds as your bird breathes, or poor grooming, your bird may be ill, have a diet deficiency, or be otherwise unwell. Birds that are sick may also be bullied by their cage mates. If any of this happens, don't let it continue - your bird's health is very important, and something needs to be done before the problem gets worse.

You need to pay attention and listen to the vet, even if it means a change in the way that you have always taken care of your beloved bird. You might have gotten the wrong cage, or set the environment up improperly. It could all be completely wrong and if you won't correct the problem then your bird may never get better. If you really love your pet bird, you'll do whatever is necessary to make sure that your bird is in top health.

Make sure that you are aware and pay attention because this is very important in the care of a pet bird. When you figure out the best way to take care of the pet, keeping them healthy will be a cinch! - 17273
