Exercise - The only practical means to good health

By Angela Giles

Good health can be the most precious possession one can have. When you are healthy, you are cheerful and enthusiastic. You have the energy to do your daily work and balance both work and family. You think positive thoughts and your brain is sharp to handle all daily issues.

As we grow from childhood to adulthood, our bodies become stronger and healthier. This is a natural process. Then the body starts to give in as we age further. We become more susceptible to illnesses and diseases. However, exercise is one factor which is often neglected but can prove to be the key to maintaining our health. There are 6 reasons for which you must start exercising daily.

1. Exercise dissolves excess fat thus reducing weight

2. Improves quality of sleep

3. Improves bone density and reduces the risk of falls and fractures

4. Exercise diminishes the risk of critical diseases like heart problems, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

5. Exercise improves psychological well-being

6. Maintains muscle strength for more years and prevents symptoms of aging

Experts advise a simple exercise schedule of 30 minutes for 5 days in a week. There is no need to join a gym and develop 6 pack abs. All you need is simple walking, climbing stairs and some aerobics.

Technology has made life very convenient. It has made elevators to take us to our office, cars to drive us home and medicines to cure us when we are ill. But this also makes us lazy and we do not want to do even simple tasks. As a result we suffer from many health issues later in life.

Health is a matter of choice and you must make that choice. Try to include physical activity whenever and wherever possible. Climb the stairs for 2 floors instead of taking the elevator. Walk up to the neighborhood shopping complex instead of driving. Play with young children instead of watching television.

It is a no-brainer that if you eat more fats than you can expend, your body will store them and increase in weight. This will put pressure on your system and lead to hypertension and other illnesses. Therefore, health is also directly related to what you eat.

Learn about different food items, what they contain and how much of them are required by the body. Not all foods are alike. Some are rich in carbohydrates; others are rich in fats while some are rich in proteins. Consult a physician to find out whether you need any additional nutritional supplementation. It is wiser to develop healthy food and exercise habit while young and continue throughout life. - 17273
