The Influence of Infant Brain Development in Smart Babies

By Michael Byrd

The quality of a person's life depends greatly on the development of their brain.

And the human brain starts to develop while a person is still in the womb. Mothers are then responsible for the nutrition that she gets during pregnancy.

Why you ask? It's because the optimum brain development of a baby is largely dependent on the important essential oils ? DHA found in omega 3 fatty acids, that the brain gets while still a fetus.

The Moment Brain Development Takes Place

The brain of an infant develops as early as 4 weeks from the time of conception. It is good to have a solid foundation even before a woman gets pregnant to ensure that a woman has enough omega 3 fatty acids with DHA during pregnancy.

Several scientists now agree that DHA consumption is vital in brain development and it is what sets us apart from our prehistoric ancestors. It is then right to assume that back on those days, the brain of our ancestors were developed with the aid of the DHA that they added to their diets.

This will make you believe just how important omega 3 oils with DHA are to brain development.

It has been observed during the ancient times that those who were deprived of DHA had a declined brain capacity. Also, the moment they moved from the savannah to the coastline, where there was enough supply of fish, there was eventually an increase in brain capacity.

Scientists doubt if Homo Sapiens (yes that's us) would have evolved without adding DHA from fish oils to their diets. [Lipids, Vol. 34:s39-s47]

Why Bigger Brain is Always Better

If we have bigger brains, we would be able to learn, communicate and rationalize better and be able to do the things that we want to do.

It all starts during pregnancy; a fetus' brain begins to develop during the 25th to 28th week of pregnancy. The brain then starts to regulate the control of bodily functions. But expect more growth 12 weeks before full term pregnancy.

Intake of omega 3 fatty acids should be continued until the pregnant mother reaches its full term. This will assure the continuous development of the baby's brain and nervous system.

Hilarious it may seem, but we have the fishes from the ocean to thank that we did not grow up like the apes swinging in vines hanged in trees. Maybe we should thank our ancestors for discovering what a great food fish can be.

Deficiency of Omega 3 Fish Oil

A research from the Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition in London, blames DHA deficiency during pregnancy as the reason for underweight babies.

A good diet during pregnancy, which should include sufficient amounts of omega 3 oils with DHA, helps prevent disorders in brain development. This would mean the need of eating more fatty fish and taking supplements of pure fish oil. [AJCN, Vol. 57, 703s-709s]

Since you are going to have a baby, wouldn't you prefer having a smart and healthy one by taking omega 3 fish oil daily?
